Greece: Mountains and Islands
Greece located in Southeast Europe is divided into mountainous peninsular mainland, the Peloponnesus peninsula that is separated by the Isthmus of Corinth from the mainland and numerous islands.
Geographical features of Greece exhibit amazing diversity across the country. The mainland is mainly mountainous (eighty percent of the land in the country) including mountain ranges such as the famous Mt. Olympus the Pindus where small many rivers originate.
The coastline of the country, eleventh longest in the world and the longest in Europe, is dotted with many islands and bays. The famed coastline of the country attracts many tourists from all over the world. The number of island is between 1,200 and 6,000 according the definition of an island (if islets and huge rocks too are included then 6000). Whatever is the total number 227 of the islands are populated and equipped to welcome tourists. More than half of the hotels are situated on the islands. Crete is the most populated as well as the largest island, followed by Euboea (60m-wide Euripus Strait separates Euboea from the mainland), Lesbos and Rhodes follow next.
The Greek island clusters are traditionally grouped as:
The Argo-Saronic Islands lying in the Saronic gulf near to Athens,
the Cyclades large and dense collection of islands located in the centre of the Aegean Sea,
the North Aegean islands a sparsely located group of islands lying off the west coast Turkey,
the Dodecanese a loose group of islands lying in between Crete and Turkey, in the southeast ,
the Sporades is a small but tight group of islands locate on the coast of Euboea, and
the Ionian Islands lying on the western coast of mainland Greece, in the Ionian Sea.
